Katie Merritt is a public health researcher specializing in both environmental health and food and agriculture policy. She received her masters in public health (MPH) in Environmental and Occupational Health in Washington, DC, where she worked on capitol hill advocating for food safety and conservation issues with a sustainable agriculture coalition.
An accomplished researcher with experience in academic and non-profit sectors, she ran the research department for a national non-profit designing and implementing evaluations for large-scale programs addressing food insecurity in low-income communities. While there, she spearheaded the first-ever randomized controlled trial to determine the optimal amount of money that programs should offer when matching food stamps for additional fruits and vegetables.
Before pursuing environmental health, Katie was introduced to the local foods movement in Colorado where she volunteered at local farms and regularly hosted potlucks. A food love from all sides, her latest food projects include leading “Urban Hikes,” a series of food and drink tours around the Bay Area and a food blog devoted to ditching recipes and cooking with what’s already in your kitchen.
